Hazmat crew removes asbestos pipe at Topa Topa

School officials report the proper process was followed and no children were “endangered” when a consulting firm removed transite-asbestos-covered irrigation pipe from the playground at Topa Topa Elementary School on Sept. 26. The process did not include notifying parents or school staff about it. Transite is the name given to cement-asbestos-covered pipes. According to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control’s website, “If transite pipe is not to be broken or crushed, and is not friable, it is not a hazardous waste.”
