Butterfly population ‘plummeting toward extinction’ in California

They are a symbol of summertime and could once be found in backyards and classrooms across America. Many schoolchildren have watched in wonder as large orange and black butterflies emerge from cocoons. But now they are “plummeting toward extinction due to landscape-scale threats from pesticides, development and global climate change,” according to the Center for Biological Diversity.
