Parts of Southern California Facing New Quarantine After Medfly Detections

The production of medflies can be realized in the laboratory by bathing medfly eggs in warm water—a process that kills the female embryos but doesn't harm the male embryos. In the pupal stage, the males canbe irradiated to render them sexually sterile. USDA photo by Scott Bauer.

A portion of San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties have been placed under quarantine for the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) following the detection of two wild flies in and around the City of Upland, San Bernardino County. The USDA, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and the San Bernardino and Los Angeles County agricultural commissioners are working collaboratively on the project.
