How tragedy brought California state science and the leafy green industry together

More than a decade ago, the California fresh produce industry experienced its worst foodborne illness outbreak: Three died and 205 were sickened from the consumption of bagged spinach contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7. The following year facing a loss of consumer confidence that cost growers $1 billion in lost sales, growers and the California Department of Food and Agriculture launched created the California Leafy Green Products Handler Marketing Agreement. It has become a model of how scientists and an industry work together to protect public health.
